A couple of years ago, Gizmo Varillas set a precedent for his Latin-infused experimental folk music in his Dream Of Better Days LP. Yet, even for artists within the strongest of identities, they’re subject to change just like the rest of us. This is the core of Varillas new single ‘Born Again’, which “is about personal transformation, changing from within and giving yourself the chance to start over. Even if we reach our lowest point, we can always rise up again. And in many ways, it’s about never giving up and empowering yourself to go on”, as Varillas states in his own words. In reflection of this evolution, ‘Born Again’ is freshened with dueling funk and reggae guitars all of which leads to a revelatory crescendo designed to fill the listener with hope for days ahead. - Hannah Thacker
